LOCATION
El Cumbrero, Carboneras, Andalusia, Spain.
Here you will find the rambla where Lawrence of Arabia, winner of 7 Oscars, was filmed in 1962.
The unspoilt Cabo de Gata nature reserve, which is marked by sand dunes, salt pans and gargantuan cliffs of volcanic rock, dotted with small concealed sandy beaches, is also nearby.
You won’t see any skyscrapers here; only friendly, laid-back villages and small, deserted beaches.
There are plenty of sports and adventures to enjoy here, ranging from horse riding, cycling, hiking, diving and fishing to quad riding, fat biking on the beach or even cable wakeboarding.
Thursday is market day in Carboneras.
San José is the bustling heart of the region and has an atmosphere comparable to that of Ibiza. Lively Mojácar, with its busy restaurants, pubs and cafés along the beach and lovely white village centre higher up the mountain, is located on the other side. The famous beaches of Los Muertos, El Algarrobico and Agua Amarga are all within easy reach.
In Rodalquilar you will find the last gold mines in all of Spain. Los Albaricoques is the town where the film For a Few Dollars More, directed by Sergio Leone and featuring Clint Eastwood, was shot in 1964.
The hinterland, beyond the coastline, is a genuine desert of prickly pears, agaves, yuccas and olive trees.
You can also visit the Tabernas desert here, with its miniature Hollywood studios.
Picturesque Nijar is located in the province of Almería, at the foot of the Sierra Alhamilla, and only 20 km from the Costa de Almería. The lovely village Lucainena de las Torres is located 19 km north of Nijar and Sorbas is only 13 km to the north-east of Lucainena. Nijar and Lucainena are both on the list of Spain’s most beautiful villages (Los Pueblos mas Bonitos de España). Although Sorbas is not on this list (yet), it is absolutely enchanting. A visit to this charming little village is highly recommended. It is also near several other lovely villages, the Karst nature reserve and Yesos de Sorbas with its limestone caves (see below).
You will find the Guadix cave dwellings nearby.
La Geoda Gigante de Pulpi is a magical crystal cave where you will find a crystal that is the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world.
